The Bureau of Water Supply manages, operates, and protects New York City's upstate water supply system to ensure the delivery of a sufficient quantity of high quality drinking water.  The Bureau is also responsible for the overall management and implementation of the provisions of the City's $1.5 billion Watershed Protection Program and for ensuring the City's compliance with the provisions of the Filtration Avoidance Determination.  Water Operations Division plans, manages, operates, maintains and provides responsible stewardship to all NYC water supply reservoirs, dams, facilities, aqueducts, shafts, hydroelectric plants, highways, bridges and watershed lands of the Delaware, Catskill and Croton water systems upstream of the Kensico and New Croton reservoirs.  The division ensures the continuous delivery of an adequate, reliable supply of high quality drinking water

through the Catskill and Delaware Aqueducts to approximately 9.5 million people in NYC and upstate communities in an environmentally healthy, safe, fiscally responsible and efficient manner while maintaining compliance with all applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations.


The Water Operations intern for the Highlands Region will be responsible for performing research, using information from manufacturer’s data, historical contract drawings or specifications to gather information that will allow a qualified person to document or calculate the maximum intended load for the Walking Working Surfaces (WWS) throughout the Region. 

This information is important for the division to meet new OSHA regulations and sustain the safety of the division workforce and other building occupants and visitors.  The Water Operations Intern for the Downsville Region will also assist the Regional Manager with a variety of office and field-based projects and tasks including project management support for the Delaware County Roadway Project (DEL-416R).


This is a paid position.


  • Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in civil engineering with a concentration in structural engineering discipline.
  • Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Student must have at least a sophomore class standing.


Selection Criteria:

  • College level coursework in science and engineering.
  • Strong writing skills; effective interpersonal skills; familiarity and/or experience with computers/software; leadership skills; self-motivation; and ability to work well with minimal supervision.
