The DEP Office of Energy, within the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT), is seeking a candidate to support energy planning efforts to meet the City’s OneNYC, 80x50 and 1.5C plans.


The selected candidate will work with the Energy Project Manager, researching energy-efficient water/wastewater processes and operations, assessing various innovative energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction initiatives for implementation feasibility, and identifying new energy conservation measures. The candidate will also assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and other energy-related communication materials and website content. The selected candidate will play a key role in informing the energy and GHG reduction plans at the nation’s largest water and wastewater utility. The selected candidate should have an interest in climate change, environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and infrastructure. Familiarity with energy and GHG emissions data and policy is a plus.


This is a paid position.


  • Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the graduate level majoring in program in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or related field.
  • Student must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). - 
  • Student must have skills in Microsoft Excel, high-quality PowerPoint presentations, data analysis, and website design or coding.


Selection Criteria:

  • Strong writing skills; effective interpersonal skills; familiarity and/or experience with computers/software; leadership skills; self-motivation; and ability to work well with minimal supervision. 
  • Strong quantitative ability, demonstrated experience of producing high-quality data analysis and reports; academic courses or work experience related to design of water and/or wastewater treatment processes; energy management; research capabilities.
